Vision and mission

To lead research that protects the environment.

Our vision is an institute that ties scientific findings to practical solutions and actively contributes to the health of the region's seas, rivers and lakes. We monitor the state of the environment, study human impact on nature, and shape recommendations that regenerate ecosystems. Alongside research we focus on educating younger generations, because the future depends on them.

The vision from the source

Our vision is to become a leading institution in research and environmental protection — one that connects scientific findings with practical solutions and contributes to sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources for future generations.

We work on the principle of synergy between science and hands-on practice, which together create healthier and more sustainable ecosystems. We actively monitor the state of the environment, study human impact on nature, and shape recommendations to improve ecosystems.

Alongside our research, we focus on educating younger generations, because we believe they hold the key to the future. Through our educational programmes we encourage critical thinking, responsible environmental behaviour, and awareness of the importance of sustainable development. Our goal is to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to address environmental challenges — and in doing so, to shape a more sustainable and responsible future.

Areas of operation

  • Constant monitoring of land, water, underwater and the air above the sea with ships, aircraft, unmanned vehicles, helicopters and satellites.
  • Real-time tracking of maritime traffic load via electronic systems (AIS) across the full operational area.
  • Engagement of children and youth in our own educational centres to cultivate a new culture and relationship with the environment.
  • Large-scale public awareness actions focusing attention on environmental issues and the need for improvement.
  • Cross-disciplinary coordination connecting marine and coastal research so complex problems are addressed holistically.
  • Crisis management and search-and-rescue service.

Actions

Together with the Global Underwater Awareness Foundation Croatia, we organise an annual sea-floor clean-up action, mobilising divers from across the Mediterranean and beyond. Throughout the year we collect data on the most affected areas, and once a year we mobilise civilian participation through this action to raise awareness and encourage behavioural change.

Operational area

Our area of operations reaches from the Cape Spartel lighthouse at the entrance to Gibraltar to the line between the Mehmetçik and Kumkale lighthouses in the Dardanelles (phase one), and in phase two all countries in the Danube basin and along the Black Sea. During the first two years, our main activities are centred in the Adriatic Sea, due to its enclosed nature, ecological sensitivity and proximity to major shipping lanes.

Four pillars of our work

01

Research

Constant monitoring of the sea, rivers and lakes with ships, aircraft, unmanned vessels, helicopters and satellites across the entire Mediterranean.

02

Protection

Rapid response to ecological incidents, clean-up operations on the seabed, and partnership with civil society and specialised services.

03

Education

The Mediterranean Education Center Pinesta near Novigrad, the nautical academy and field workshops for children and youth.

04

Partnership

Long-term strategic partnerships between companies, organisations and communities for sustainable solutions that outlive generations.

Pinesta Nautical Academy

Summer camps where young people learn the sea.

Through the "Knowledge for the Future" programme the Mediterranean Institute for Monitoring organises summer camps at the Mediterranean Education Center Pinesta near Novigrad.

Our centre stretches across 40,000 m2 directly along the seafront, with capacity for 460 beds and continuous operation since 1960. Alongside classrooms and sports grounds we run an on-site medical service staffed by a doctor and a nurse.

We are the only provider organising a boat-licence course for teenagers, combining theory with practical workshops on a variety of vessels. Teens gain a real feel for maritime navigation and safety at sea.

Our camps include diving workshops, marine biology field trips, sustainability labs and environmental-awareness programmes — all designed to connect young people to the Mediterranean.

Partnership for the future

Together we invest in knowledge that outlives generations.

Partnership for the Future marks a decisive step in shaping sustainable solutions that benefit society, the environment and the economy. In a world where ecological challenges grow more urgent, collaboration between companies, organisations and communities is essential. The strength of partnership lies in co-creating innovative solutions that combine ecological and social components.

By combining expertise, resources and experience we achieve goals that would be difficult for any single organisation to reach alone. Partnerships create synergies where every side contributes to a shared outcome. When companies and institutions support sustainable development, education and environmental awareness together, we build the foundations of a future in which young people are equipped with the knowledge and skills to protect the planet.

These partnerships are long-term and strategic. When we invest today in education, ecology and sustainable solutions, we create a world where tomorrow's leaders and enterprises can make responsible decisions to preserve natural resources and improve quality of life.

We invite you to become our partner in a project that links ecology and the education of young people, and together shape a sustainable future. Your support will enable educational programmes, workshops and field work that inspire young people to treat nature with respect.
