Mediterranean Institute for Monitoring

The Mediterranean is a living being.
And it watches us.

We scientifically monitor the seas, rivers and lakes of the Mediterranean, connect research with younger generations, and help shape the decisions that protect nature for centuries ahead.

Vision and mission

To lead research
that protects the environment.

Our vision is an institute that ties scientific findings to practical solutions and actively contributes to the health of the region's seas, rivers and lakes. We monitor the state of the environment, study human impact on nature, and shape recommendations that regenerate ecosystems. Alongside research we focus on educating younger generations, because the future depends on them.

Four pillars of our work

01

Research

Constant monitoring of the sea, rivers and lakes with ships, aircraft, unmanned vessels, helicopters and satellites across the entire Mediterranean.

02

Protection

Rapid response to ecological incidents, clean-up operations on the seabed, and partnership with civil society and specialised services.

03

Education

The Mediterranean Education Center Pinesta near Novigrad, the nautical academy and field workshops for children and youth.

04

Partnership

Long-term strategic partnerships between companies, organisations and communities for sustainable solutions that outlive generations.

Operational areas

From Gibraltar
to the Dardanelles.

Our operational area stretches from the Cape Spartel lighthouse at the entrance to Gibraltar to the line between the Mehmetcik and Kumkale lighthouses in the Dardanelles, and in a second phase to all countries along the Danube basin and the Black Sea. For the first two years, the focus is on the Adriatic.

01

Adriatic Sea

A closed, sensitive and heavily loaded basin along the major international shipping corridors. Priority zone during the first phase of operations.

02

Mediterranean

Connecting the Slovenian, Croatian and Italian coasts with the wider Mediterranean. Shared real-time AIS-based monitoring of maritime traffic.

03

Underwater and coast

Posidonia meadows, underwater habitats, coastal nesting grounds and the rivers that deliver nutrients and pollutants to the sea.

04

Air above the sea

Monitoring ship emissions and airborne oil-spill surveillance with unmanned aerial vehicles. Preparedness before a slick reaches shore.
